Lip Tints Are Here To Stay!!!

Hi again.

I'm here to tell you about a new product. Oh, yes, I've tried them in the past, but I kept banging me head against the wall using Lanolin in my recipe. I was determined to use Lanolin, because that is a good medium for lipstick, it is said.

Using lanolin, my lip tints became hard and sticky. Color did show up but not as I would have it....smooth and silky. I would get frustrated with the quality of my lip tint, then take it back out of my shop and display. I did this twice in two years. It certainly posed a challenge. Was I up to it? Could I make my lip tint smooth and silky and with a bit more color?

I love my lip balms, but sometimes I like a bit of color to my face without wearing make up. Even though I make products that I don't particularly enjoy myself, I am more motivated if I do. Apparently, I was motivated.   Three things were changed in this attempt, and all three seem to show such good results.

1. Well, lanolin is not the only medium! So, I went to the drawing board for a third time a couple of weeks ago.   I decided to try castor oil and eliminate lanolin altogether. I don't use lanolin in any of my other products. I just had some on hand out of curiosity and thought this would be a good use for something I don't use anywhere else. (Guess I won't be buying any more lanolin for awhile.) Truthfully, I thought the tint would be too soft. I really thought I was going to have to do a mix. But, for now, I'd try this tint with castor oil only.

2. Another new tack I took was mixing my color before I made the tint instead of mixing it in the warmed liquid of the tint. I mixed the colors as you would for make up. I crushed the powders together to get that right color for the three shades. Oh, that was fun! And so much more efficient! Then, with my recipe in the warm liquid state, I added a substantial measure of color.   It looked just like warmed melted lipstick in a glass cup. It is beautiful, I thought.

3. Then, I poured this lovely liquid into a .07 oz. slim natural tube. These tubes are smaller than lip balm tubes..more narrow and finer application. This tube can put the color at the top of your lips easily without going off the lips. The slim tube has an elegant appearance, and because of its unusual shape, is easier to find in our purses and bags. It's long, so it doesn't get lost in your pocket.   What had stayed me from using these in the past is I thought it would be hard to pour such thick liquid into these slim tubes. Surprisingly, they poured quite well.

Have you tried one, yet? Oh my, my!!! This is my ideal lip tint. Castor oil worked like magic! This tint is quite hard in the tube, but goes on soft, smooth, and silky. It leaves a color almost like soft lipstick.

This month only (February, 2012), for every order $10 or more, you get one of these free with your purchase. You can even choose the color you prefer. If you enjoy lip balms and color on your lips, this is quite the product. Bees wax, aloe butter, and castor oil make up the balm, and lip safe sparkle micas and oxides make up the color. Each tint is fragranced with a companionable flavor oil. I made Cherry Red (with maraschino cherry all natural flavor oil), Strawberry Pink (with strawberry cheesecake flavor oil), and Chocolate Bronze (with dark chocolate flavor oil). They are all delightfully smooth, silky, sweetly fragranced, and lovely to wear. You may want one of each!!!

Happy Winter Solstice!!

Decorating a tree has been on the Solstice for my family has been something I've done for more than a decade now. It's late compared to everyone else, but it is my way of celebrating the longest night of the year!

Today, I'm decorating a real tree Jeremy, my 16 year old son, and his friend will chop down for me. I'll put Christmas music on and make some hot chocolate and decorate the tree. It's also "Mom" time.

Mom has passed on two years ago. But, I have a lot of "Mom" times....whenever I'm in the kitchen baking or cooking a big meal (I always got to help). As an adult, I called Mom many times to ask her how to cook or bake something in particular; ...crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, and other odd times. But, decorating a tree was something she really liked to do, and she made it special. The tunes, the hot cocoa, the oohing and aahing over ornaments and lights and the finished tree.

Well, traditions change and remain the same. As a child, we put up the tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. As an astrologist and one aware of cycles, I like putting mine up on Winter Solstice. Same method...tunes, hot cocoa, (real) tree and lights, etc., but not the same day.

Why they call it the first day of Winter is beyond me. Almost all of the time, winter weather has already come upon us. But, it definitely is the longest night and shortest day of the year. And, while Jeremy is growing up, I let him stay up this night as long as he wants. After decorating the tree, he has something to look at and dream upon until sleep overtakes him.

And, the best part of Winter Solstice is the "changing of the guard", so to speak. The days will now become longer; oh yes, slowly at first, but it picks up as it goes along until we reach the Summer Solstice where it changes again. Winter Solstice is dark, but it has the key to hope and longer days. I love it for that and celebrate it with lights on the tree for brighter days.

It's that Time of Year again!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I often laugh at the term "old school". I think..."well, get with it then". But, I think the term applies to me in this way! I do not begin to celebrate Christmas until after that Thanksgiving meal. So, I'm old school in this matter, I think. LOL

My parents would put our tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving. My Dad would work every Friday after Turkey Day, and then Saturday, we would put on the Christmas music and decorate the tree as a family. This is when I grew up believing Christmas begins.

Now, I'm a small business owner. I find that many businesses, the majority of them, begin Christmas even before Halloween. I know, financially, it is the most lucrative time of the year. However, I still feel the same about beginning Christmas after Thanksgiving, and I run my business that way. I am only today putting Christmas packages of soap and skin care together for the Farmer's market I set up at every Saturday. And, I begin my Holiday sale in my online shop Thanksgiving night. Some things just stick.

Shampoo Soap Retraction No. 685

Okay, no...this is my first retraction; however, I can see how this may escalate when there is no way to erase online comments, posts, and more. And, this is important.

I'm continuing to get messages about the hard water and shampoo bar issue. My last post on this subject was wrong, and I was corrected in this comment on the same post. I went to the site to which the comment had directed me, and the answer to why an acidic or chelating rinse is needed in hard water was laid there before me.

Yes, I know. I didn't make a big deal out of it, did I? That's the shame, and I apologize. It seems quite simple now, but the fact is that a chelating agent is needed when rinsing hard water out of our hair. A chelating agent is a substance that makes minerals and organics water soluble. When we rinse our hair with hard water, minerals and other substances that are not soap cling to our hair. A chelating agent makes those substances easy to rinse out and hence the "final" rinse.

Since learning this, I've discovered a supplier that sells chelating agents in powder form and am curious if using in shampoo, would we need a chelating rinse? My next experiment.

Again, my apologies for misleading you all. I thought I knew something, but as you see, I did not. I'm glad to learn this, and I sincerely hope you are, too. AND, I am always open to knowing I am wrong. Thank you for that comment, Anonymous!

Rain Outs at the Farmer's Market

...which I can ill afford now that I'm single again. I began going back to the market because of the extra income I do so need. Well, what to do when I'm rained out - and it looks as if that is going to happen at tomorrow's market.

I think I know what to do. I will offer Free Shipping at my online shop every weekend I'm unable to go to the market. This creates a "market-like" atmosphere in that you come in, pick up and pay for what you want, (wait a couple of days), and it arrives free. And, this may in turn increase my sales for that weekend to help make up for my loss at the local market. I will also offer reduced shipping for all International orders - according to weight - I will reimburse like value as for domestic orders. Whatever it would cost to ship domestic is the amount of refund for International shipments.

What do you think? Is it fair? When my local customers get a break, my online customers don't. When my local customers don't get a break, my online customers do. Seems odd, doesn't it?

I think we are going to give it a go this weekend - as the forecast is calling for 70% thunderstorms and showers Saturday. I'll have to let you know how it goes.

Good morning! August sees a.....

Price Reduction

I'm taking a different approach to my shop and it's help toward a better economy. I was offering free shipping. For shop owners, this is a toughie, because all the cash required to ship comes out of the seller's pocket. This brings a $10.30 order to $6.50 for two soaps, which after costs and expenses, I am making $1.50 on the sale. If I sold 60 of these a day, I'd be good to go. But, I don't and I'm not! :)

I can afford to lose money on my product more than I can afford to lose money on shipping. Shipping is cash out of my pocket...product discounts are monies not coming in. Not money going out. This, I can afford more to lose.

So, I've restructured my product pricing. I've lowered almost all my prices by a substantial amount. Soaps are reduced $.80 a bar. Lip balms are reduced $.40 a balm. All 2 oz. jars (mask, butter, salves) are reduced $.75 and 4 oz. jars reduced $.95. Sprays are reduced $.20. And check out the new pricing on the sample packs - yeah!!

However, these prices are until we see a betterment in our economy. I'm just taking a cut temporarily. You see, my supplies continue to go up, while I just took my prices down. Some day, I will have to adjust that.

New Products

I've reintroduced my Calendula Honey soap - a bastardized castile (2/3 olive oil 1/3 coconut oil) - excellent soap - with calendula petals and local honey added to this beauty. I've also made new fresh Jewel weed soap for poison ivy, oak, or sumac; and this year, I've added calendula petals and calendula oil to it - it is beautiful and so very functional. :)

Seven, yes count them, seven new lip balms are added to inventory. This brings my lip balm varieties up to over 40!! These new balms are made to be summer worthy. They are linked by a new butter - kokum. It is a very nice butter for lip balms, lips, and to hold balms together a bit better than other butters. There are 2 balms that are using other new butters, as well. My Acai Honey lip balm has acai butter (palm & shea butters, jojoba oil, and acai fruit pulp powder) and my Chai Tea is using Green Tea butter (sweet almond oil, green tea leaf powder, hydrogenated vegetable oil). These balms seem to excel when the weather is warm and can handle the humidity.

New products, like chamomile eye cream and Natural Facial Toner were derived working with customers. If you would like to see a product offering in my shop you think is lacking, please contact me - I'm easy to work with.

New & Final Labeling

Have any of you seen it? My new labels?

I print my soap labels as needed, so they are all changed over. However, my sticky labels print a page at a time or batches have not yet been remade and are in the transition stage. But, all labels will look like what I'm showing you here. I've changed my banner and avatar at Etsy to look like my packaging. I'm very pleased with it. Finally, after 7 years, I come up with what I really like. Now, to find a printer, because these babies are expensive to print!!!

Well, it seems everything this month is "new". New prices, new products, and new labeling.
Yay! for new. : )

I'd like to share a new product of mine - Aroma Scents. I make Aroma Wands in 2 ml slim long tubes and Aroma Pots in 5 ml clear pots. These are strongly scented aromas (at 10%) and should be tested before wearing them. I make them simple with only beeswax, coconut oil, and fragrance. I am offering several skin safe fragrances.

If I get more than a few requests for essential/natural or precious oils perfumes, I will also offer them regularly. At the present, however, you may request them, and if I have it, I will make it for you.

The prices are very reasonable - a product I'm looking to share not exploit. The wands are $2.50 and the pots are $4.45 each. Priced quite nicely for stocking stuffers.

A Personal Moment

Good morning all.

I've been called "Liz Taylor" in these parts. But, I've since learned to keep my mouth shut regarding the quantity of relationships I've experienced.

And, today, I am free to say I've notched another one. Yep! That's right! Another relationship gone South for good. Does it sound like I'm bragging? Well, I'm not. I'm just a bit overwhelmed with my history of relationships!!

I've experienced 8 serious relationships with those I would have gladly married or did marry (4 of them said yes). This last one (no..we weren't married whew! makes breaking up a whole lot easier) is the hardest break up for a few reasons.

1. We were together 9 1/2 years, living together 9 years April 1. That's a long time in any one's book, but the longest I have ever been with someone. I've experienced breaking up many times, and I can truly say that it does feel like "death". And, it is a death of some sort as dreams, goals, like-mindedness, and partnership are gone just like that; they die. And, that's the crying part.

2. I'm 55 this Sunday. Who wants to spend the rest of their life alone? Okay, I'm 55 not 85; but after so many break ups, I'm thinking I do not want to do this again. So, yes, spend the rest of my life alone. The argument here is to take it one step (day, hour, minute sometimes) at a time. But, when I start feeling sad, this creeps up on me.

3. Two years ago, the problems began. I wasted two years hoping, working, striving, and concentrating on change, but, it didn't happen. In fact, you may use the word escalation and be completely correct. What stayed my hand was the circumstance. I own the house, and he came here with nothing but his clothes and personal stuff, like fishing rods and such. If it had been reversed, I would have left him 2 years ago. But, it is harder to tell someone else to leave when they have no where else to go.

4. And, last it could have been avoided. My first born says to me one day, "You have to want something more than the addiction to beat the addiction." I'm convinced after two years, my partner does not want me, our relationship, nor his family more than the addiction. He is strong willed and beat it for 6 years until one day a couple of years ago. Now, it seems he cannot keep away from it. I know not what else to do for my own peace and the example set for my second born.

So, thanks for letting me spill it all. I'm not usually for baring my soul, but it seems this is a catalyst to emptying myself of some of the pain. ~kathleen

Good morning all.

It was my fortune to run across this fellow Etsian a few weeks ago. We discussed a feeling we had in common and then begin talking trade. She makes the most exquisite note cards from her photographs. I enjoy using note cards very much, and it was a pleasure doing business with her from beginning to end. I asked her if I may interview her for my blog, and she agreed. Here are her words:

1. What is your product? Tell us exactly what you are offering us?

Photographs, they capture the beauty of nature and all her creatures. My images are sold as art work to be framed and hung on the wall for decorations.

2. When did you begin and what inspired you to this end?

I think I was born with a camera in my hand LOL but have been using a 35mm camera now for over 30 years went public in 2001

3. Where do you work most? Out in the field or in the home. Is editing a part of your work?

I take the images out doors in beautiful settings, I market here at home. most of my editing just involves cropping

4. How is it going? What is different today from the visions you had when you began.

I think it is going ok, I had to stop doing shows to care for a diabetic dog and that cut my sales pretty bad but success isn't always messured in sales IMHO

5. Why do you do it?

I love photography always have and I have a strong love to our Mother Earth

Photography is what keeps me going each day, I have a bad back and need to walk everyday and carrying a camera just adds to the fun of walking

You may enjoy note cards, too, as well as or maybe instead beautiful pictures framed around your home. I'm sure she would enjoy your visits, too.

Happy Earth Day

Good morning all:

This is one of my favorite days of the year...Earth Day. I'm closer to Mama Earth today than ever before in my life.

I live in the woods between two ridges of Dogwood and Redbud beauty this time of year. Honeysuckle is greening up and blackberries are leafing out.

I live in a Hollow where I'm dependent on the weather for my garden crops and herbs' production. I have no air conditioner to obstruct my relationship with the air I breathe, and my water comes from a spring.

When the weather is not good, it is not good for me, either. But, when the weather is good, it is perfect.

I'm surrounded by trees, bushes, and plants of all types. The stars show themselves at night when there are no clouds, because there are no lights to block their beauty.

Birds in abundance, as well as insects, bees, spiders, and snakes. I appreciate them all as I see how they live in nature, dependent on each other for food.

My mother cherry tree fostered hundreds of little trees under her girth. It looks like a Cherry Forest!
This time of year, life begins anew. I'm glad to witness it once again. And, I'm thankful my life's path has led me here, close to Earth on Earth Day. :)

New ArtFire Shop

Hi again.

I've opened a new online shop this morning at ArtFire. I read there are some real concerns with the opt-in privacy issues at Etsy. I realize, while reading forum threads and blog sites, that some customers will no longer shop at Etsy. I don't know for sure if any of my customers have taken this stand; but if they have, I want to offer them my products at a more private friendly site.

It is my understanding that you don't have to "join" ArtFire to buy from shops listed there.

Many venues offering crafts and arts people a place to sell their handmade goods are socially inclined. Etsy, ArtFire, and a few others I've passed through encourage connectivity between artist and artist and customer and artist, and customer and customer by providing forums, blogs, ratings, etc. ArtFire just seems more user friendly to those who do not wish to connect.

So, this is a just a note to advise you of my new shop! I hope you will visit me there and check out my added location. The Site is called Sweet Creek Soaps, but my banner is Sweet Creek Herbs.

Elegant Handmade Skin Care Now Ships FREE!!

Hi all!!

1) A definite news flash: Sweet Creek Herbs now ships free (and reduced international) with a $10 minimum.

I received a LL Bean catalog in which was stated that they were going to Free Shipping on all orders indefinitely, because the founder started the company that way. It is a big deal in these hard economic times with gas prices increasing daily. It provoked me into thinking if I can offer the same to my customers.

I read in a forum that businesses do not make money when they ship free. That is incorrect. It cuts out the retail profit, but there is still wholesale profit. In order to keep the Free shipping indefinite, a small minimum of $10 will prevent losing money.

2) New Format

You may have noticed some changes taking place in the Shop. The goal is to create consistency, provide more than one of a product for sale at the same time, and provide feedback in a more convenient manner.

The consistency comes in the title and description. Are you able to read the title and description with little question in your mind? That is the goal. What this means is you won't find Whipped Shea Butter, lavender in a listing. But, you will find 2 listings of 4 oz. butters and 2 listings of 2 oz. butters of Your Choice - and you will now be able to buy 2 of the same butters without a special order. This will require entering your choice at checkout, and so far, it is working great. Thanks!!

Also, you may notice in all listings but (yet) the soap, feedback for that product. I am pulling (private) feedback from my shop's FEEDBACK and entering into the listings. I will continue to add as we go for your convenience in knowing what others say about it.

Which brings me to my next topic.....

3) Feedback!!! I have received my first neutral feedback. And, it seems, right after having received it, quite a few rolled in. Much like the first one opening the door to a few standing in line. 0_0 Many of my peers and customers scoff at my concern as they seem to take into account my sales:

1900 positive feedback

Yet, 7 (7???!?!?) Neutral feedback as of this writing. I've become nervous opening up the new feedback to read it. LOL

Okay, yes, if you read them, you will notice many of them are nothing to do with my product. hehe And, all right, it is neutral and not negative. And, thankfully, it doesn't seem to affect sales. (whew!)

And, I'd like to say for the record, I will not retaliate. In fact, I give positive feedback to every paying customer.

But, it does tend to bum me out when I read them. If you are one of those 7 and are reading this - I offer to refund your money for your order. Thanks!

4) New products have been and are being introduced. I now offer soy wax tart melts. Not only are they a blast to create and make, but I love melting them in my personal sized diffuser. I didn't have to buy a special tart warmer, which pleased me, to test and use my melts. They are strong and true! One tart can last through several burnings and still continue to scent the air around it!

New soaps include 2 new castile soaps. I love them! I'm using the scented right now, and it has become my soap of choice. They are made with organic extra virgin olive oil. At trace, I add activated charcoal, a blend of green and pink French clays, rhassoul clay, kelp, and green tea powder in a bit of grape seed oil, and to the scented one, a blend of lavender and eucalyptus oils for scent (and benefits to ALL skin types). OMG, man, it's good.
Another new soap is my Goat Milk Banana Mango soap. This at the request of one of my customers. It smells rich and sweet, and the soap is a beautiful goat milk soap. Mango butter is added at trace.
Brought back from last year's warm seasons and available very soon are Honeysuckle Hollow, Calendula Honey, Blueberry Cobbler, and White Jasmine.

Heads up - Whipped butters (all but the Mango) are in their last month of availability. Just letting those who read this know...they will go on sale the last few days of April.

5) I've made a major decision in my soap making career. I've decided to pull out of the Farmer's Market (65 minutes away) and put that focus into my online shop, gardening, and my family. I have been a part of that market 5 years. I've made friendships that will last the rest of my life. :) However, it requires 3 or more days a week to operate efficiently, and I've realized recently that has taken its toll on my family, health through gardening, and even myself. This decision has brought a sense of relief and weightlifting. I hope you will see the results of this decision through my shop and activities here online.

Gardening Again!

Hi you all!

Another day I'm up and able, I ought to be thankful for that. How are you? I have to say I've re-discovered my method of rejuvenation. It has been some years, though.....

I love what I do, don't misunderstand. I own and operate my own soap and herbal shop, and I'm inspired and excited by my shop's progress. Starting up and making a business succeed takes a lot of time. The first five years, I was absorbed by it. I did not do the things I've always done in my last twenty or so years.

I didn't read. I didn't work out my astrology charts, I didn't garden, etc. I worked hard at the business almost 24/7 363 (maybe 2 days off a year) days a year. Just last year, I began finding myself again.

I began reading. I credit this to my son, Jeremy, who gifted me on Mother's Day with a John Grisham novel I had not read. It took me a few months to read more than a few pages at a time, but I eventually found that enjoyable space when reading an exciting novel puts me in a rejuvenating zone again.

Just this spring, I re-found my gardening spot. It has been 5 years since I put my hands in soil with purpose. Last Sunday, I spent the day in my garden beginning to reclaim what I had worked so hard for before I began soap making. It is going to be a hard task, but it felt so good to be out there. I went back at it Monday, even though it was lightly raining. Yesterday - too wet. But, today, it will be dry and sunny, and I'm going to step out in it for 30 minutes or so.

It felt good, it makes my space look good, and it is going to feed me and mine. Yes, I planted, too. I planted spinach, lettuce, and peas. I have lots of plans for the small space I'm reclaiming this year. And, next year? I hope to reclaim some more.

So, now I re-discovered two out of three main structures of myself. I'm looking forward to the day I can re-discover my passion for astrology.

Questions and Answers on Shampoo Bars

1. How do you use a shampoo bar?

To be fair, I rarely get this question from a guy. He often will use his bath bar to wash his body and hair and not think twice about it. But, for the ladies, I often answer this way:

First, I like to wash my hair with my head flipped down and most of the time in the kitchen sink. I wet my hair thoroughly to the point of sopping, then taking the bar and rub it a few times in my length and then over the scalp a few times. I set the bar down and work up a lather with the length and the scalp hair altogether. Some are afraid of hair breakage, but I work my lather as I would if using a bottled shampoo - no different. When cured, my shampoo bars lather as well if not better than bottled shampoo, so working up a lather is not a problem. The lather tends to stay in place and not run down the head into the eyes! When I've massaged my scalp a bit with my fingers, I rinse it out. My shampoo bars rinse cleanly out very quickly.

2. What is the deal with an acidic rinse? Is this to rinse the shampoo completely out?

There is a lot of controversy over this issue. I will tell you what I know:

Before I began making shampoo bars, I read in one of my herb books that our grandmothers often told us to use an apple cider vinegar dilution as the final rinse to our hair. The reason? the hardness of the water. Many would steep lovely hair herbs in this vinegar over a period of time, strain it and use it for their hair, using 1-2 teaspoons of herbal vinegar to rain water or other water. What our grandmothers knew was that vinegar softens hard water.

The 'cones found in commercial shampoos and conditioners mask the minerals in hard water. But, shampoo bars do not. They will clean your hair, but when rinsing out the shampoo, you may find your hair feels waxy or rough. This indicates you are using hard water. To restore the water to a neutral pH, add a bit of vinegar. The acid neutralizes the alkaline water and softens it, which in turn softens your hair upon using it. I use a cup of this dilution as my FINAL rinse.

If you are using soft water, there is no need to use this dilution. ACV (apple cider vinegar) dilutions just put us all on equal footing for softer hair with shampoo bars.

3. What are the advantages of shampoo bars over commercial shampoos?

The most obvious is eliminating a bottle for paper packaging. One sheet of paper wraps 5 regular bars of shampoo or 8 sample bars. And, recycled paper is widely available.
Another obvious reason is for travel. It is wonderful. No bottles, just a bar that travels well.

But, these are the social reasons. There are personal reasons, too. Synthetic detergents, chemicals we do not know, and a ton of other ingredients are eliminated from our head. We are now using only pure whole ingredients we do know, such as coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba, etc. made into shampoo soap by way of a solution of sodium hydroxide in pure distilled or rain water. Real soap versus detergents.

This is what it has done for me...hitting menopause, my hair was coming out in clumps. Now, it does not and even feels thicker than ever before. My hair is soft all the time and requires a washing twice a week versus every day or every other day, becoming oily rather quickly. My hair is easier to hold a do, too. :)

I'm using shampoo bars in my sixth year. I haven't regressed. I've not used a bottled shampoo in over 6 years, not once. And, I don't miss it. I've come to enjoy the shampoo bar experience every time. I make 19 varieties of shampoo bars, so variety isn't a problem, either. Because shampoo bars leave nothing in your scalp and hair, there is no need to change out shampoo bars, either. You may use the same one for years and find it works the last time you use it as well as the first time.

In this article, I give you my reasons. But, in the next article (part 2), I will give you comments from my customers. There are hundreds of them. Shampoo bars are my best sellers online and have been for more than 2 years. And, next time, I will share their experiences with you.

Lotion Bars - New Product

Good morning.

I thought I would tell you about my Lotion Bars..a new creation for my Shop.

They are divine for moisturizing your hands, feet, knees, and elbows with ease. These are made with simple and pure ingredients of almond oil, prime pressed cocoa butter, virgin coconut oil, and unrefined beeswax.

The fragrance free bar contains nothing else.

The lavender bars contain oil of Bulgarian Lavender and a pinch purple jojoba beads.

The rosemary mint lotion bar contains oils of rosemary and peppermint and a pinch of apple green mica. I think it is a perfect bar for the feet.

Another bar I make is the Sweet Orange with oils of tangerine, sweet orange and Orange Valencia, as well as sages and a caress of basil. I added orange jojoba beads for color. The jojoba beads used in these bars are completely melted so they are smooth and use well.

The tropical lotion bar is tinted yellow green here, but the new batch has titanium dioxide in it to lighten the color to a yellow white. The scent is obtained by blending oils of grapefruit with sweet buttery vanilla fragrance - the combination reminds me of coconuts and pineapples.

They are at an introductory price of $5.50 each right now (along with Free Shipping). In January, they will be $6.50.

Tribute to a Reviewer

Hi Online Small Business Owners (and anyone else who wants to read this):

I just had a wakeup call!

How many times has a youtube (or other) "guru" emailed you with the intent to have you send them free products so that they may review them for you online? Me? I have had several times many. Too many. And, unfortunately, I have sent some free stuff out. Guess what? Never was I contacted again in those instances. No reviews, no response to my emails, etc. *shakes head* Have you had like experiences?

Today, I received an email from someone who does reviews on youtube. Not only that, she has placed her second order. She placed her first one without fanfare - I didn't know about her youtube presence. So, she was treated like all my customers. That is important for us to realize. How can a reviewer talk about our customer service without experiencing what all customers experience?

She might have not told me now except one her followers is asking about some of my other products, and she wanted to know which ones were top sellers.

My lesson in this? Other than what I've already said, "No, to all the freebie requests." How disrespectful anyway! We work hard and longer hours than we are paid for to produce products we are proud to sell around the world. And, some one writes and asks if they can have it for free.

Hi again.

I am pondering a subject the last few days. How to find and promote your product to the right market. It is funny how when something occupies my mind I keep running across the topic from other sources. Etsy's storque has been bantering this about, too. The common theme is that your market isn't you, but others, usually with money.

Okay, I have to put the brakes on here. I'm thinking some of us play to the market of us and we are correct in doing so. I know my market is me! And, of course, those like me. I'm glad to have all others - I think my products' quality rises to meet all of our needs and wants. But, affordable quality skin care is my motto, so affordable has to apply to all of us, even me. :)

What if your market is everyone?

Again, I have men products, unisex products, children products, pet products, and fun stuff for everyone. I make fragrant free products, green herbal all natural products, sweetly scented products, exotic from other lands products, etc.

And, this is not just because I'm a soapmaker. I am a soapmaker of one type - there are several types, I've noticed. My type is simple. I realize the simpler I make a product, the more appealing it is to my customers and the better it sells. Not hard for me - staying simple. When I get carried away and try to complicate things, my product suffers. So, I know my type.

The other types are wonderful. There is the fancy type. The complex type. The round type. The mold type. And, many more, I'm sure.

I go out into the other shops both on and off Etsy, and some of these soaps are just gorgeous. Who is their market? I wonder.

As the Holidays fast approach, I'm reminded again to promote to my market. And, I say again, my market is everyone. In a way that makes it simple, I just promote to everyone. In another way, I wonder if I'm right? hahahahahaha

Promotional Giveaway at Sweet Creek Herbs

Hello again...

I'm doing a promotional giveaway November 1 through 8. I'm giving away a sample of my newest whipped shea butter and a lip balm with every order regardless of how small is may be.

My new whipped butter is based on a few customer requests. 1) something vegan friendly, 2) sinks in super fast - no greasy feeling even without the emu oil, 3) less shea and more light oil or jojoba added, and 4) light and creamy

So, I've created a wonderful recipe, I think, of 50% shea (as opposed to 75%) with aloe butter added. Aloe butter is really aloe enfleuraged in coconut oil. (A very nice skin oil that is not drying unless used too much in a soap recipe.) To the butters, I add jojoba and an herbal oil I make for my MEmu Oil, which consists of marshmallow root, echinacea leaf, and elder flowers macerated in extra virgin olive oil. And, that is all.

Having less butter and no wax (so you may use it on your face!), this is a creamier lighter butter, not as stiff even upon setting. It melts right on the skin and is very easy to spread and/or massage in. And, it sinks in quick.

I have a story about the sinking in...last night I burned my foot using a concentration of essential oils too powerful for our skin - it was a mistake. It burned and burned (cinnamon, clove, lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary) and I knew to cut it with oil (not water). So, I reached for my pot of this butter and coated my foot with it - it eased the pain pretty quickly and in an hour, it had soaked into my foot. Boy, was my foot soft all over! An hour is a long time - but I had that butter on thick - I wasn't using it as a moisturizer, I was trying to cut the eo's and ease the burning pain. And, it did do that. :D

Hi again.

It might seem an odd time to do this, just before the big Holiday season, however, I feel compelled to change my shop sections.

I have them simplified at this point: products grouped by product category. You know...shampoo bars, bath soaps, butters and oils, lip balms, etc.

At the farmer's market this year, my products were arranged and sold by scent category instead of product category. I have 5 I work with...Fragrance Free products, Lavender, Exotic (like amber, patchouli, vanilla, etc.), Green Herbals, and Fruits and Flowers. This seem to make it easier for customers to find that for which they were looking.

I'm not convinced I should sell this way in my shop. But, I want to change it up and bit and give it some pizzazz for the Holidays. What do you think?

Tips on Shipping Skin Care

Hi You All

The soap and skin care business is not always a "fun" time, but when it comes to packaging orders to ship around the world, it can be quite enjoyable. I think there is something special about receiving a skin care package that looks like a gift.

I'm not the world's best at anything, I wager, but it seems I can pack a nice box of skin care for shipping. I know this as my feedback continues to come in about it. And, I'd like to share some tips with you. I took some pictures, too.

The first thing I do is line the package. I use Kraft tissue paper, but I think many things can be used...white or print tissue paper, seasonal tissue paper, wrapping paper, etc. You'll see why I line it at the end of this post, but I think it gives it a finishing touch. I've started lining my First Class bubble mailer orders, too. I think it conveys my sense of caring about their products all the way to their door.

I like everything to look "pretty". I think of companies like Godiva, Swiss Colony, Figi's, etc., and how they package their orders so nice. I try to do the same but with regard to skin care.

So, I like to tissue wrap the soaps. I wrap large and small soaps in white tissue paper.

I seal jars that I think may leak (including butters in the summer) with electric tape around the lid and jar. I place them in zipper bags to ensure, if they do leak, they are confined to themselves. If it is a plastic jar, I package it as is. If it is glass, I then wrap it in bubble wrap I've received in my orders. It is perfect to use - still looks good, functional, and recyclable. But, unsightly in relation to all the other packaging, so I wrap all bubble wrapped items in tissue paper, too, and then I top it off with a raffia bow.

I place 4 oz. jars in large zipper bags that I think are not attractive (sandwich bags), so I then wrap them also in tissue paper and raffia bow. I do this with the lotions, too. I place them each in zipper bags then wrap in tissue and bow. The lip balms, tube salves, and small jars look pretty good in just the sealed bags and I think complement the tissue wrapped items - giving the look some variety. Going with this idea, I often will enclose a sample soap unwrapped, like the occasional chocolate that is wrapped - just to offset everything else.
I think it is a good idea to enclose your business card with each and every order. It is not just a business card, but a personal thank you note, too. I write on the back of the cards a note to all my customers. Selling online, you have to make an extra effort for the personal touch. So, I have all the orders ready and the cards enclosed. When I begin processing printing labels, I write each card at that time, pulling on all the experiences I share with each particular customer. This goes into my little note.

After the label is printed and trimmed to fit, I close the package by tucking the top half of the liner over the order. I'm still after that gift package idea, so when receiving an order, the customer opens the liner first and sees the "gift" or you know, their order. It seems to be, overall, a nice experience, they say.

The motivation to do this comes from how I would like to receive a package. It seems to provoke a feeling of joy, and if I can spread some of that around? ~it seems to come back around. :)

Thank you for stopping by. I learned something today I feel I must share with you. Apparently there is a bill out before our House of Congress. If passed, this bill, by its very requirements, will stamp out small manufacturers/businesses of handmade personal and natural cosmetics, like myself and thousands of others.

It seems, once again, Big Brother is trying to stamp out the little guy. I'm 54...I've seen this a quadrillion times. Corporations are feeling the loss of sales due to hundreds to thousands of small business owners/manufacturers who are doing better by the day. Why are they doing better and better? Because they are making safe and better cosmetics than the corporations - and more and more customers are realizing that.

Because I have seen this so many times is not saying we shouldn't act. In fact, we have to act. One day, the little guy is not going to take it anymore, and there will be no more Big Brother. But, for now, we have to fight this their way.

Among other things, this bill will call for 1. labeling to match the big corps that will include all trace elements so that a product that includes Olive Oil, Cocoa Butter, and Lavender essential oil would take up the space of an 8 1/2 x 11 paper...thus

Now, I don't know about you, but my customers appreciate the fact that they can read my labels. This would take that right out the window. The Corps know this.

What?!? Isn't this business rape? I won't be able to make product anymore, I will be inundated in paperwork. The Corps know this, also.

3. This bill is based on the concept that cosmetics are killing us. Are cosmetics killing us? And, if they are, wouldn't it be the big Corps who are responsible. The natural soap makers of today are relatively new to the cosmetic scene. But, we are getting the rap. And, what about diet, lack of exercise, stress, poor doctors, etc., to blame for bad health?

Whatcha' Doin'?

Hi again.

This is not a post as much as it is a "newsletter" this time around. I've been gone so long, I must catch you up on the goings on of the last 2 months.

Since I wrote last, I've had another birth day celebration. This year I worked the Kingsport Farmer's market, since it was a Saturday. It was a really nice day. Friend of mine from the market took me out for a celebratory lunch. I had a pomegranate margarita. The old-fashioned margaritas are still my favorite.!!

I took a trip to south Georgia by way of Waycross with my son to spend a weekend with my never-have-met-before niece, Pam and her family. I met my half sister and half brother that night. Then, the next day, we all went to the family reunion I had never before been to on my mother's side of the family. I remet cousins I had met when I was 7 years of age. We connected first on Facebook in January and set the reunion up from that moment. It was an awesome culmination of combined energies on behalf of the cousins. There are pics of this reunion all over the internet - it was an emotional repast for everyone.

And, most recently, I was invited to participate in a local TV show likened to a Regis & Kelly show, called Daytime Tricities on CBS (local Channel 11 out of Johnson City, TN) at 10 am. It was a live show and a lot of fun. Morgan King, the host, invited me, but he was on vacation when I did the show. Amy, his cohostess, was very charming. She flew through her paces with the show with grace and humor. It was fun interacting with her and her guest co-host, Bob. I have a video tape of the show, but I need to find out how to turn it into a DVD and upload it to youtube, so that I may share that 4 minute spot with you.

In the meantime, I take walks (even in this oven-like heat), I've put reading off for awhile as I feel I'm working two jobs - peddling and online venues, and I'm formulating ideas for more product. I hope to be back to posting a bit more regularly - and I apologize for my lack therein. I do have a week long fair coming up in late August where I demonstrate my product. This has become a traditional show - my 4th year. And, even though I do not re-enact soap making of yesteryear, I do show them how I make old fashioned soap the modern way. :)

The Exchange Place Spring Garden Fair

Hi again. This last weekend found me doing a "historically themed" craft show. Many of these types of shows desire vendors that demonstrate and/or sell heritage or traditional crafts.

Several of the old buildings have been restored and kept in great shape due to these few annual shows they hold a year. Their pamphlet says the site hosts "the hub of an early 19th century plantation...with saddlebag style log house and its dependencies-kitchen, smokehouse, schoolroom, springhouse, blacksmith shop, slave cabin, granary cowbarn and gaines store which stocked supplies for valley farm families."

This is across the street from where I am set up. There are several crafters on boths sides of the old brick street. :) Most crafters have been doing this "show" for years. We are set up at the Roseland visitor center that once was, I think, the Kitchen in the 1850's. It has a long open front porch and a long back closed in porch. I set up Saturday at an event that is unusual from my main stream craft shows. It was at a Farm called Still Hollow. They hosted "Living History Day-A-Fair", and it was a really fun and educational show for me.

The 1860's Living History and Dance Society sponsored the event. This group formed in the summer of 2009 by a group that home schools their children. The children have a sewing class where they learned to make their 1860's dresses, pantaloons, and bonnets. The boys make the dress boys wore then, too. They learn the etiquette and dancing of that era, as well, and offer demonstrations or instructions on civil war dancing, etiquette, and dress of that time period.

Still Hollow Farm is located a few miles outside of Greeneville, Tennessee. Their farm is available for weddings, birthdays, and tours, as well as farming 180 acres yearly. The original farm was established in 1857 with 560 acres and grew to well over one thousand acres.

It was a wonderful show. We learned Saturday about how the men, women, and children wore their hair back in the 1860's, and what kind of bonnets, hats, and hairnets were standard in that society. We have some storytelling time. The Civil War Dance demonstration was awesome. The live music that was performed using instruments of that day and songs popular then was just a hoot, because we all know these songs and we allowed to sing along.

Then, there was an 1860's fashion show, baseball demonstration, and Ladies Tea in the afternoon.

I enjoyed all this and some sales, too.

I learned that all the people (men and women) wore gloves to keep from touching each other in public, as well as hygienic motives. I learned that hair was slicked back and not allowed to escape the "hair do" of the day....again, men and women. I learned that bonnets were worn straight on the head, no tilting for fashion's sake; they were worn to keep the sun out of their faces. A tanned face, hands or any part of the body showed someone who was not well off; one who had to work for a living. (Even those who did strove to keep the sun off their skin.)

I had a good time, and I look forward to more of the same. I haven't done a lot of shows in the last couple of years, but this year, I'm doing more. The shows I'm choosing, however, are of a different nature than those I normally do. My next show is in a couple of weeks at a place called "The Exchange Place" in Kingsport, Tennessee. This place was known for a "meeting" place that was the crossroads for going many different places. People would bring their wares to trade, and many would stop there on their way west or south. It is a place where many vendors dress that part, too.

I will write about that one when I do it. For now, enjoy the pictures of the show I did Saturday.

Farmer's Market 2010

Hi Folks:

Yesterday, Kingsport Farmer's market gathered to begin another year...for them, their 33rd year...for me, my 5th year. The organization has been through many changes in their 33 years. In my 5 years, we have been relocated twice, now setting up in the same location for the second year. Apparently, this location is our permanent home, but this organization has heard that before.

And, I'm not going to get political about it at this time. I come to show you a new set up I'm trying out. New products are consistently being made for my business, and I've run out of room to show it all at a show or market set up. The oils, butters, and salves table was beginning to overflow last year, and over the winter, I made several new butters.

So, I set up my booth in more of a display manner. My gift table was overflowing for the reason of Easter being the next day. Still sold little of those. My V tables in the background shows more what I'm talking about.

I still do not bring all my stock. But, I give them my business card with my Etsy shop address on it for a more complete view of my inventory.

My reason is that when a table is overcrowded, it is hard to see what is on it. For me, this is the case. So, I thought about this last year, and I am giving it a go this year. One day cannot tell me very much; but I was much more relaxed with my product and its display.

I'm not completely happy with the gift table, though. Yes, I can eliminate the overcrowding, but it seemed the "aisles" between the tables is a bit tight.

What do you all think? I am open to all relevant suggestions. :)

Valentine's and Roses

Hi you.

I did a lot of reading this morning, and I now realize that Valentine's Day is a modern holiday. It has no basis in history other than a couple of "Saint" Valentines were executed on February 14th. It is associated with love notes in the 1400's...but farther back than that, no connection between the executed Valentine's and the romance we associate with Valentine's today.

On the other hand, it sure is celebrated by a lot of people in a lot of countries in many different ways...from friends to sweethearts to marriage. I particularly found the story of Japanese women giving men chocolate on February 14 and men giving chocolate in return a month later to those who gave them chocolate. Pretty cool. But, this tradition (we are so commercial) was developed by a chocolate business. :) ->Information found in the same link above.

The bottom line is, however, we are going to celebrate this holiday regardless of "tradition" or "history" or even "connections with romance and the 3 Valentine martyrs", because it is a holiday of Love, Friendship, Good feelings toward Others, etc. in our world and time today.

And, it is at the time of year we need a upbeat holiday to brighten the bleakness of the near-end of winter and not yet foreseeable beginnings of spring. It is bright with reds and pinks and whites with bows and ribbons and lace. It smells good with the roses and carnations and all flowers and taste delicious with confections and candy and chocolate.

I began something new with my business last Fall. I fell into seasonal products. It was not planned, but it sure did seem as if the path was paved. My new winter products gained the business much attention through treasuries, sales, and others' feedback. A natural step seems to pause at Valentine's Day ♥, before we make our way to spring scents. (Yes, the fragrances are ordered and on their way - soaps to be made next week.)

So, Sweet Creek Herbs has a new section in the shop called Valentines and Roses. It was fun photo shooting for these pictures. But, I hope to do better next time. Please help yourself and stop by this section to see the colors of pink and red and white. :) Thanks!!!

Which Flavor Lip Balms to Make???

Hi.

I'm making lip balms today. The two I made for this winter are killer recipes. They are smooth and glide on so easily and smell awesome. I made Chocolate Mint Lip Balm and Orange Wax Lip Balm, and they have been very popular. Yay!

Now, I would like to make some more. I have this awesome vanilla flavor oil I'd like to mix with some peppermint oil for another new one. But, I'm sitting on some fun flavor oils, too. They include:

Vanilla Hazelnut

Orange Sorbet

Honey

Peach

French Vanilla

Bubble Gum

Pina Colada

Chai Tea

Pineapple & tangerine

Vanilla (yummy)

I don't use sweetners in my lips balms. Although edible, not a really good thing to do...so, I make them aromatic but not sweet. In fact, flavor oil do not taste - they only smell. So, it wouldn't do us any good to eat it anyway.

I also have several essential oils that may be mixed with the vanilla or such, like the one I'm making with vanilla and peppermint. That is fun, too.

If you would like to have some input into this dilemma, I would love to have it. If not, I'll come up with something, and hopefully, it will be good. Ha ha ha ha

Eureka Inn Etsy Holiday Craft Show Pictures

Hi everyone:

This was a fun show. I have never done a craft show of this type.

First, almost all the vendors are Etsy sellers. That is a first for me. And, it was awesome and so much fun to talk "Etsy" comparing notes and techniques. I have worked many craft shows, and this was the first time there was a camaraderie deeper than usual. A

nice connection.

Second, this show was held in a historic Inn. Every room in this Inn is different from the rest; they are all unique. They are also named along with a number, not just a number. I set up in the

Garden View Room, while across from me was The Cook's Room. They were all decorated according to their name.

Third, I was the only soap maker there. Yay! That is a lot of fun and extremely rare. So, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I met three vendors I would like to interview and show their wares on my blog. Be looking for that.

Winter Whipped Butter

I've just got to talk about my new whipped butter.

Up until now, I've just whipped shea butter. It is a super butter to whip and when adding about 25% oils to it while whipping, it is awesome in its ability to sink into the skin and leave it ever so soft.

So, whipping mango butter is a new experience for me. But, it is awesome, too. Upon whipping a blend of mostly mango butter, some shealoe butter, and the coffee butter, this product takes on the consistency of whipped cream. It is so scrumptious looking.

What brought on the idea was finding jasmine floral wax and coffee butter on sale with one of my suppliers. They had more than that on sale, but these two new items "beckoned" me. Lol.

Coffee and jasmine - just sounded so good. I knew I could not use shea butter, because the aroma would offset the aroma of the two new ingredients. So, mango butter is so low on the aroma scale, I decided to try whipping it. I love whipping it and using it whipped. It is a very softening butter and melts right into the skin when whipped with other products. It is awesome in appearance when whipped, too.

The coffee butter melts real well and whips nicely with the mango butter. The jasmine floral wax is tough to melt. It has to be melted above the using temp. and brought back down to the using temp. before whipping it into the product.

After whipping my ingredients, I found the coffee butter stronger in aroma than the jasmine. So, I added a couple of drops of jasmine sambac absolute and hand stirred each butter jar. I felt like I was working an apothecary. It was so cool. And, I got to hand stir each jar of butter for my customers.

Did you know a hand stirred butter is a very airy butter with wonderful moisturizing properties? I am enjoying mine so much right now. I hope you find it in yourself to enjoy one, too.

Cocoa Vanilla - New Soap

The controversy is the fragrance oil used in soap.

So many soapers believe that the time has come to product all natural soaps. So true, it is time. And, so all my soap recipes are 100% natural soap. However, adding a fragrance oil usually makes the soap less than 100% natural.

And, of course, the difference between essential oil and fragrance oil should be brought out here. Essential oils, when you see that ingredient in your soap, means you are getting an all natural plant oil or wood resin oil in your soap. Cedar, cypress, lavender, patchouli, rose geranium...are essential oils that are often added to soap.

Vanilla, rose, hazelnut, christmas pine, and other fragrances are oils added to soap just for scent. And, it is widely believed this detracts from an all natural soap.

Well, this is my take on the whole thing:

Fragrance oils do detract from an all natural soap only in the sense it has added synthetic oil to create a lovely scent. It cannot be called "all natural" now. This soap I'm adding to my shop has added Vanilla Fragranc oil to it. It is all natural except for that. So, I cannot call it an all natural soap. When all ingredients are added and percents are calculated, it now becomes an 96% natural soap.

I do think many of our synthetic detergents with all their synthetic ingredients, including fragrances, have led us to many dermatology problems. But, if your skin is NOT sensitive, then I think using all natural soaps with synthetic fragrances is not harmful. At least, it has not harmed me, but my skin is not sensitive.

I'd love to know what you think?

Cypress Christmas - New Bath Soap

Hi again.

I've listed a new soap at my Etsy shop.

I'm going to answer a question I never do while writing my description. I'm going to write about why I made this soap.

First of all, it is a Holiday or winter, 2009 soap. And, I don't usually make "holiday" soaps. So, why make it?

I made my first holiday soap for Halloween with my Etsy street team (EGCG). It was so much fun, I wanted to do a holiday soap again. Christmas is the very next holiday I could get in on, and so, I made 2 actually (but, the second one is still curing and so not for peeking at until listed).

This one is scented with the essential oil of cypress - nothing else. Pine is a bit too sweet and pungent for my taste. Balsam fir is nice, but I made that three years ago, and it sold moderately. There are other evergreen scents, but I use cypress in many of my blends, and so it was the first one I thought of. And, it is wonderful. It smells like I am in an evergreen wood with the quietness of a new fallen snow.

I wanted to play with color a bit, too. I used parsley in part of my soap and layered it green and white. However, to do it again, I would add more soap to the parsley. But, it still has a nice appearance with an icing sort of top instead of a layered look.

And, this soap is the one that helped me see my new packaging with the "present" look about it. I really like my new labels, and this soap led to my seeing it. So, I will probably make this soap again.

Another reason for this soap is an excuse to use hemp seed oil added at trace (instead of in the

recipe, like my Eucalyptus Lime soap). I wondered at the lather of such a soap - hemp seed tends to add creamy richness to lather and conditioning properties, too. This recipe is already

quite lathering, so I am curious.

And, my curiosity is quite gratified. I took this soap to my kitchen sink and washed my hands with it. Wow! The lather is just wonderful - thick, rich, creamy, and bubbly.

Yes, I know, and I apologize most sincerely. I went into a funk phase and found myself creating some new items like crazy, soaps and other skin care, and here I am on the other side.

It's been a tough time, no lie. I've been ill, my car wouldn't take me to 2 market days, and the rain has kept me from the rest. Hard to do without when you are use to doing with.

But, I cannot argue with the results, and maybe that is what it takes sometimes, a down time to let the creative juices flow.

New Etsy Finds

I call it "Etsy Finds on Soap Molds and Beveler". I had a lot of fun finding them. I think I'd like to tell you a bit about them.

The first is a hand poured original design mold by Grand Horse. This particular one is a silicone mold of a full size bath bar. I just love it. It is original, and therefore, a bit costly. But, somethings in life are just worth it. This sure looks like one of those items.

The second is by Saharas Supplies. I include it, because this little Etsy shop carries over 100 molds. That is a great selection. And, some of them are very hard to find elsewhere. I especially like the one I included in my "finds".

The third find is by Tart Molds by K. They make their own wax tart molds out of silicone. They are very nice molds for soap embeds or sample/guest size soaps. I especially like the honey bee and honeycomb one.

The fourth find is by Native Baby. She carries quite a few silicone and other molds for soap makers who enjoy animals and other fun shapes. I like the mini loaf pans for melt and pour with soap embeds. But, I had to include the doggy mold. How cute for pet soap!

And, my fifth include is not a soap mold, but a simply and seemingly well-made soap beveler. It is a simple design, but simple designs work best for me. I'm very tempted, here, to check out beveled soaps!!

And, so my dear readers, here are the new Etsy finds of the season. With soap makers every where getting ready for the Holidays, these are great finds to encourage a little creativity and unique displays of rare and beautiful soaps.

Appalachian Fair 2009 Eye Candy

Hi. I'm doing a show at the Appalachian Fair this week. It is a tough week, because this show is 1 1/2 hours from my home, and I am commuting daily. It is also from 3 to 10 pm., and I am usually abed before 10 - so the schedule throws me off a bit. I also demonstrate at this show, and that requires some serious prep work.

I would like to just post some pictures today. I'll be back with some more...but this will get us started.

One of my favorite things about this gig is the herb garden cared for outside the building I do my show. It is the nicest herb garden in a formal setting. I enjoy sitting out here when I take a break. I also walk it before I begin my show. It has herbs from other cultures and many varieties of standard herbs. I just love it.

The museum will raffle off their quilts, one each year. This is a magnificent quilt - pictures cannot do it justice. I keep telling the ladies I appreciate their watching over my quilt like that. I bought 3 tickets! :D

Of course, there are other crafters there, as well. If you are invited to participate, you may demonstrate your craft, set up your booth, and sell your products for free. Other booths cost $550 and $750 each. So, I feel this is a really good gig, a win-win situation, because I am adding to inventory and selling my wares all at the same time for free (just my gas). It is also my time to prove my authenticity to my local customers.

This is my fourth year at the Fair, and these ladies are here every time. They volunteer their time to work on quilts for the Museum during the Fair week. I am impressed with their dedication and skill.

Inside the farm and museum building at the fair are other buildings. There is a small cabin showing beds and other antique furniture. And, there is an old fashioned candy store, too. It is a big hit at the Fair.

This is my Lavender Sea Salt soap at the Fair. I have to tell you it is my best seller so far. I sold 3 Monday, and 3 yesterday. This is the only one with which I've sold 6 soaps. My pet soap is next

Chamomile

German Chamomile or Matricaria recutita (or chamomilla)

A skin care herb I use a lot in my products. In fact, I often tell customers my top three herbs are the three C’s – calendula, chamomile, and comfrey; followed by marsh mallow, lavender, rosemary, peppermint, echinacea, meadowsweet, lemon grass, basil, eucalyptus, and more.

Chamomile is widely available in three species: roman, german, and wild. Interestingly, while the roman and german share many properties and appearance, they do not share the same genus. All three seem to have beneficial properties for our skin and in aromatherapy.

I personally like the essential oil of roman and the plant herb of german (although I grow the two species and the wild grows here, too). I have tried all three oils and all three herb plants – and I have my favorites.

I love the german chamomile herb. The flowers dry faster and better than the roman and have greater aromatic value than both the roman and wild. It produces a very aromatic herbal oil, especially if macerated with an odorless oil, such as almond or grape seed. (It is very important to have dried herbs when making herbal oils – otherwise rancidity will set in quite quickly.) I make this oil with elderflower for some of my products; and, I make it with st. johnswort for other of my products. Both oils are done in sweet almond, and smell just so good. I add the one with elderflower to my eye oil (MEmu), and it makes this fragrance-free oil smell deliciously and sweetly herbal.

German chamomile is better known for its anti-inflammatory properties (even though the roman and wild both have some), while it is less known for its sedating properties (while the roman is more know for this).

According to my RD Magic and Medicine of Plants, studies support many of the traditional benefits of chamomile. It seems chamomile also treats upset stomach and menstrual cramps. And, studies also support the anti-inflammatory action of chamomile. I use it in my first aid salve for that reason. I also use calendula to speed cell replacement and st. johnswort to staunch the bleeding...but the chamomile is for the pain and/or swelling resulting from the wound.

The most exciting side effect of this “medicine” is the aroma. Wow! It is so soothing and pleasing, it makes treatment a pleasure. ♥

Rosemary in the Home

Rosemary or Rosmarinus officinalis

A skin care herb I am loving in my garden, in my home, on my skin, and in my hair. This is a luscious herb I enjoy very much.

My RD book writes this about rosemary...”a reputation for strengthening the memory, it soon became an emblem of fidelity for lovers...etc.” Another book writes that "students wore sprigs of rosemary in their hair while studying, brides wore it to show they’d remember their families, and the dead were buried with it to show they’d not be forgotten".

Most of us are familiar with the culinary aspects of rosemary. There are many recipes written for this herb alone, especially used in meat dishes of lamb and pork, as rosemary aids in the digestion of fats. Rosemary makes awesome herb butter and is delicious in baked potatoes, too. The stems of rosemary are placed on a grill to discourage insects and release a fantastic aroma.

You can also bring in a few fresh branches from the plant to create a wonderful aroma in the air of any room. This is perfect for the bathroom...lovely and aromatic.

I’ve used rosemary all these ways and more. I have placed a few leaves of rosemary in my bath to stimulate my poor blood circulation. It is quite therapeutic in its aroma, I think. It is written that it helps with muscle aches, too.

I know its reputation for eliminating lice and lice egg sacks from the hair. It also seems to impart good health and shine to hair, also. I’ve read it is for dark or red headed people, but I have light headed customers who enjoy it very much.

It is also a strong disinfectant – a good house cleaning essential oil. (I think Pine, Lemon, Rosemary, and Peppermint are the best for this use. A future blog?)

Rosemary can grow in mild to temperate zones with many varieties to choose from. It actually can thrive in a pot and brought indoors during winter. Rosemary does not need a dormancy time. So, most of us could enjoy rosemary year round. If you choose to grow herbs, this should be in the top 5, in my opinion.

My favorite way to enjoy rosemary is just to smell it. I love its fragrance so very much; I can smell this daily and not get headaches from too much aroma.

And, I AM hoping it IS improving my memory, because, as most come to know, I sure do need that.

Lavender in the Bath

Lavender! I am a soap maker of 5 years, and this is by far the most asked for oil and scent in my market.

Apparently, even the word lavender is associated with the bath. It comes from the Latin work "lavare", which means "to wash". The Greeks and Romans used lavender water with which to rinse their bed sheets. Lavender water was a popular face wash 14th through the 19th centuries. (1) And, it was a popular strewing herb for its insect & mice repellent properties, as well as the long lasting fragrance of the plants. (2)

Keville & Green (1) write that is a good oil for all skin types. They say it is a cell regenerative that actually helps in preventing stretch marks and skin scars. It reads to be a pretty awesome skin herb and oil.

Lavender also enjoys the reputation of a "balancing" oil, which means that if you are tense and stressed, lavender tends to relax; and where you are lethargic or even irritable, lavender can "raise the spirit" and stimulate into action.

Mind, Body, & Spirit write "lavender is the perfect bathroom oil...it will relax your mind and muscles after a hard day's work, and is also good for your skin and hair."

I read in three sources out of three that lavender is good for acne, burns, and for delicate and sensitive skin; it also speeds cell replacement.

It is not the only oil and/or herb good for the bath, skin, and hair, but it is a good one with which to start a new regime of natural products. From lavender, you may want to go more woodsy (cypress is my favorite), more flowery (rose geranium comes to mind), or more fruity (LEMON, yay!), but I think Lavender is a great place from which to begin your aromatherapy adventure.

I have also read that lavender is one of two oils that seem safe enough to use undiluted. The other being Tea Tree oil from Australia. When I go out in public, I use a drop as my natural deodorant - it works very well without fear of negative side effects. And, I KNOW it

keeps me de-stressed, because my reputation seems one of a "friend to all". Now, I know me better than that. But, it seems, others don't know my ugly side...probably thanks to this lavender deodorant. *laugh*

I had a customer at the market yesterday who found all my lavender products too weak. Someone had given her a lavender spray that made her feel so good she said, but it was much stronger than any of my products. Odd. I use between 2 and 3%, the high end on the aromatherapy scale. I found out she had been given a lavender "fragrance" spray - not essential

spray. She was convinced she had the real deal when in fact, she had a man made synthetic fragrance - not plant derived at all.

Does this make a difference? Yes, it does. Lavender has molecules of alcohols, ketones, and esters to make it what it is. These molecules actually attach themselves to some of our own cells and effect change.

The molecules of fragrance oils linger and hang out, but do not connect. When a molecule of plant oil connects to other molecules, it can and does effect change. This is what gets rid of odor molecules - change the molecular structure. Fragrance oil or man made molecules do not connect to other molecules, and therefore do not effect change. It masks odors but does not eliminate them. Plant oils actually eliminate them as they connect and effect change. This is my understanding of how aromatherapy works.

So, when you pick up your lavender product, read the label. If it reads a bit "fishy", then it is probably fragrance oil. If the real lavender plant oil is used, somehow this reads out pretty boldly, because those of us who use the real oil want this to be known.

Do I have lavender oil in my products? Oh, yes. I don't own one bottle of Lavender fragrance oil. All my lavender is Essential oil. I think the price is fair enough to use even in soap. What products do I make with lavender oil? Oh, my gosh, several. Take a look...

Thyme In Vinegar

I've made a few herbal vinegars in my time, but the one I enjoy most is Thyme.

Don't groan...it is true.

I make a thyme vinegar every year with fresh dried thyme. I pack quart jars with this year's dried thyme and pour apple cider

vinegar over it until covered. I cover them with a lid and place in a sunny window for up to two or more weeks. I shake them at least once every day.

And, while it may be true that creeping thyme has the strongest medicinal qualities, garden or common thyme is most commonly used in cooking, so it is my thyme of choice. I use my thyme vinegar for cooking, a digestive tonic, and a medicine for colon viruses. Using garden thyme allows me to use only one thyme vinegar.

I can share a few ways right off my mind...substitute it for use in barbecue sauce recipes, use it on cooked greens, use it as the vinegar in oil and vinegar dressings for salads, and a few drops on baking fish does a good job, too.

Also, after a heavy meal, like lasagna or spaghetti, or eating too much, I will swallow a teaspoon or two of this vinegar to prevent getting heartburn. The heavy feeling in my belly subsides, too.

Until I made this vinegar, I used lemon juice on colon viruses. Now, I use this vinegar. Thyme is reported to have strong disinfectant qualities, and may be the reason it helps my family.

Oh, btw, while I was outside taking pictures today, I had to take this one. I like to try and capture bees and butterflies on flowers, but rarely remember to do so. I went over to take my first pics of sunflowers this year when I saw this bee. Isn't it a nice pic?

Catnip

A little-known herb. A common weed for some. Many, who do remember it from their childhood days, say their grandmothers grew and, now that they think on it, used it.

I did not grow up around herb usage. I stumbled upon herbs as an adult. But, it was love at first stumble. I am still fascinated by the properties of so many of our herbs. There seems to be many definitions of that term: herbs. But, I find I like this one: whatever plant material that benefits the body. This means edible flowers, veggies, fruits, and mushrooms, too.

But, catnip is an herb not commonly used. I think it should be. Here are the many reasons for thinking so.

Catnip as an Insect Repellant

Catnip is a very effective insect repellant against mosquitoes, other kinds of flies (like gnats and no see-ums), and cockroaches. I find it works just slapping the branch of a catnip plant on my person. However, catnip macerated in an oil works, too; as well as catnip essential oil in a spray (even though it is catnip, do not use this on your cat – they do not process essential oils through their liver very well). Catnip as a Nervine Tea

The first few books I picked up on herbs indicated Catnip tea would settle the nerves. I had also read bee balm (monarda) tea relaxes the muscles. I thought – what a magnificent pair. So, I made tea from these two herbs many, many times. It is a knockout flavor with a wonderful feeling of contentment when I enjoy this brew. I also think you shouldn’t drink an herbal tea on the run – it is to be enjoyed thoroughly while relaxing and putting our feet up to do so. Now, some say that is what relaxes a person – sitting down to drink the tea. Well, and if it is? I, personally, think the combination of sitting and drinking the tea is what does the trick. They both work toward relaxing our bodies.

My infant son also knows catnip tea. By the dropper, he learned the benefits of catnip on the colon and digestive involuntary muscles – relaxing them so that he could pass gas.

Catnip with its side effects

This is a new side of catnip for me. My books only mention women expecting a baby should avoid catnip because of its effect on menstruation. I had a customer who is taking neurontin to check online to see if it is okay to also drink catnip tea. Well, I did, and first I found this:

This is a long blog – and I apologize. Catnip is not a very simple herb. But, it is wonderful. I hope you have a chance to experience it sometime.

Today, I’m listing a new product – Catnip Oil. I macerate my own catnip leaves in extra virgin olive oil and hemp seed oil. When I bottle it, I add a bit of jojoba for a longer shelf life and a thinner application. It is awesome for me in repelling no see-ums. And, this is one the studies seem to back up, esp. for mosquitoes and cockroaches. $8.00 for a 2 fl. oz. glass bottle of pure catnip oil, no fragrance or essential oils added, so that our young people may use it safely, too.

Good Sunday morning to you all.

This morning, I'm in the process of listing some new items at my shop on Etsy. I've listed my handmade Gardener's Salve and Gardener's Lotion Bar for two.

My Gardener's Salve is made with a rich herbal oil consisting of 5 herbs of calendula, chamomile, st. johns wort, nettle, and green tea macerated in extra virgin olive oil, macadamia nut oil, and jojoba.

It has a heavy cocoa butter base and a nice amount of wheat germ oil to work on your skin without penetrating very quickly. Essential oil of Lavender, Rosemary, and Tea Tree (of Australia) are historically used to aid the salve in healing cracked skin. The reason for this salve is the cracked skin of hands and feet.

I've been making this salve for several years. I thought to discontinue it this year, because it is a salve then tends to melt in the heat of summer (at market and shows). This gets the tin oily and messy to handle.

I had a protest on my hands. The customers of this salve are quite loyal to it. I guess it not only helps their skin, but they have told me it repels biting and annoying insects. Wow! A side effect that is NOT harmful!

I decided then to go back to the drawing board and strengthen the salve's hardness and endurance for the heat of summer. And, so I did.

It was a couple more steps to make it a lotion bar. This is a new product for Sweet Creek Herbs. The lotion bar is based from the recipe of the Gardener's Salve, but with some tweaks to create an awesome lotion bar for the hand washing sink (or travel, etc.).

Yes, a month to be exact. However, I have some great recent pictures and some wonderful goings on that I am prepared to share with you. Enough for a few blogs. So, pull a chair up and get ready for some interesting read in your spare time (your what?) as I prepare to write and amuse you for a spell.

Essential Oils In Soap

Hi again.

I have come across some interesting experiences with regard to essential oils in soap. It came about when I made a shampoo bar everyone seems to love. I left it unscented so everyone would be able to use it, even those with sensitive scalp and skin. But, letting others test this bar, as I prefer something more aromatic.

Yet, through the years, I receive some serious positive feedback on the marshmallow shampoo bar. So much so, I finally decided I need to try it, too, even if it is unscented. So, I use it one day.

Up until this point, I have used Lavender shampoo, because I love Lavender. I love my soaps and shampoo to smell like an herbal garden.

But, I just had to try it and see if I liked it more than the Lavender. Well, yes I did. I do have drier hair since I entered womenpause, and this kept my hair from drying out longer, it felt very, very soft, and full of body. But, you see, I like an aromatic bar. So, I decided to make the marshmallow shampoo bar with a blend of essential oils I use for the Marshmallow Bath Bar. Oh, this was very, very nice. Yes, I liked the Marshmallow scented shampoo bar.

Then, as things happen, other scents begged to be used with the Marshmallow shampoo bar. I made Marshmallow Peppermint shampoo, Marshmallow Bergamot Shampoo, and Marshmallow Honey Almond shampoo, as well as Marshmallow Clary Sage Shampoo. I have made 5 more marshmallow shampoo bars with different essential oils and one with an all natural flavor oil. And, the Clary Sage had a touch different ingredients added at trace.

However, 4 shampoo soaps have the exact same ingredients except for the essential oils added. And, the 5th with Clary Sage and sweet almond oil in lieu of avocado oil, and emu oil in in lieu of MEmu oil, definitely is a bit less moisturizing than the other 4 with the MEmu oil and avocado oil.

And, the 4 shampoo bars show slightly different results in the hair upon washing. The Essential Oil blend used first seems extremely kind to drying hair. Softens it a lot, too.

The Peppermint seems to leave an extra shine to the hair and a bit more squeaky clean.

The Bergamot is becoming one of my favorites...softens and detangles and gives a fluff to my hair.

The unscented is very effective in cleaning and rinsing out, but it seems nothing extra is given.

Not very scientific results, I guarantee you that; however, I do think there is definitely a difference in the results of using these soaps beyond just the aromatic aspects. I, for one, think essential oils do make themselves felt in our soaps and shampoos.

Craft Shows and Farmer's Market - the season has begun!!

Good day, my friends and browsers:

What a whirlwind of a week it has been. I've done my best to keep up with both the outside world and internet world - and, it is not easy. I didn't even twitter for two days!!! Can you believe it?

I have started my Farmer's Market season Saturday, April 18 - and it was a great day. We have a new location this year, right on Center Street (the main street that runs through downtown) and cannot be missed by the most focused of drivers. Years previous, our loyal and regular customers had trouble finding us year to year. Yay! for everyone on this deal.

I've posted pictures of the first day on my flickr account. I have not found a way to post my flickr to my blog, yet, but I am working on it. I am also wanting to add a calendar to my blog so that you may know where to find me if you are looking to see my products in firsthand.

Last Saturday, April 25 and 26, I did a Spring Garden Faire show at The Exchange Place in Kingsport Tenn. (Pictures of this event are at my flickr account also - which is the link from the title of this blog.) This is the first year I did this show without rain or cold weather. It was beautiful albeit hot for this time of year. In fact, I noticed the pups and doggies act as if we are in the dog days of Tennessee, usually occurring July-August range. Whew!

Everyone is planting now here. Annuals, perennials, and trees. I hope you are having good weather wherever you are.

I tell everyone about my blog in the last two outings. I have had two outstanding responses from others who blog, too. But, most, I could tell, wasn't sure what I was talking about. :)

I feel I am going to have to work a bit harder this year- I now have two worlds I operate in -and now that one world is kicking back up to action, I need to remember to do both worlds. Last year, I only had eBay to think about. This year, I have 5 shops online, a facebook page, my blogspot, my flickr account, my twittering, and I belong to a bath and body guild. And, I am very excited about it all. ♥

I'm a little late with this, but I took advantage of the great weather this last weekend and worked outside until I could no longer stand two days running. Oh, the work George and I did! I am so glad for this time together and time on my herbs and garden.

So, yesterday I played catch up, and today I am back to work. I was going to make shampoo bars today, but I thought I should start here with my promised blog, list some new items, and wrap some soaps to make room for the new ones.

Herbal Skin Care

I called my talk Herbal Skin Care. My partner and I cultivate an acre of herbs, as well as harvest (with a conscience) wild herbs. It is not by accident I live in an area abundant with a variety of wild herbs. So, I approach my skin care products with an herb point of view.

In my talk, I introduce my self by telling my group how I became interested in herbs, and then how that interest progressed to where I am today. A short history, so to speak. Sometimes, a talk becomes so involved, we have to go through the aids in a hurry. And, sometimes, the aids become the talk.

I like to include the herbs I use in skin care - at least most of them. This visual aid lets them see the herb, smell the herb, even touch the herb. I include exotic herbs I use but do not grow, too. Wouldn't you want to see what frankincense and myrrh look like? ☺

Butters always fascinates people. Oils have to be extracted, but natural butters have only to be scraped out of a nut shell. Shea butter is still an unknown, and I like to tell my groups all about Shea - origin, process, size of nut, etc. And, exotic oils go over well. I show Emu oil, vitamin e - dark and viscous, macadamia nut oil, etc.

And, I like to contrast oils and herbal oils.

And, oils! Ah, how to present oils. First, I used bottles with dropper caps. No, after a time, the rubber erodes. Second, I used caps on my bottles. No, after a time of taking cap on and off, the oil will leak. This is my best idea so far - a roll on. You do not risk spilling the oil, and people can try it on their wrist or arm without a mess, a win-win situation. And, they look very attractive, they cost little, and so far very practical.

You can use your own additives/herbs/powders, etc in the bags above. I think additives, like seeds, oats, pumice, kelp, and more would make interesting visual aids and topics in a soap talk.

The same can be said of the butters and oils. I showed some herbal oils that some soap makers do not use. But, some soap makers can show olive oil colored with annatto seed. That would make an interesting visual aid.

I find people just love it if they are able to use their senses to enjoy what you are talking about. Of course, I brought my product, too. But, the raw materials used today to make homemade soap represent the exciting aspects of soap making. And, they may be used to excite the imagination of your group, just as they are used in your daily excitement of soap making.

I hope this bit of information helps. You cannot write down a whole talk, because so much material comes from the groups themselves. The easiest talk is when you are allowed to answer questions. If you have an interested group, this will become the best part of the talk.

A Speaking Engagement

Good day, Dear folks:

I am feeling pretty good today.

But, for days preceeding a speaking engagement, I'm a mess. I cannot think of much else, and I keep wondering why anyone would want to hear what I have to say. Anyone can find out what I know, all they need do is look it up. :)

I guess the nicest thing about my engagment last night is that my audience seemed very interested in my story. The worst thing is the hour drive and the storm coming in from the south!!

The Topic was "Herbal Skin Care" and the group is an herb society in Kingsport. It was held at a place called The Exchange Place - a historic site that was used in the 1800's for exchanging goods. It has an old schoolhouse on the grounds. I wish I had taken pics of it. I do have a show coming up there at the end of this month, however, and I will then.

My camera's flash is not working anymore. So my pics of the talk are terrible. It was a great gig, because I had the floor to talk all about my products, then I was I allowed to sell what I brought (which wasn't much). The pretty packages are gifts for the ladies, and what was left over sold. None came home. Yay!

This weekend, I will blog about the talk in a proper manner. I will outline the aspects of the talk, show you what I used for visual aids, and give you tips you may not have when it comes to speaking to a group. I have good pics of the visual aids, and you are welcome to use any or all of what I use. ;)

Before I end this, I'd like to show you a couple more things. I've been working on swirling my soap lately. I feel I'm not up to par in this area of soap making. But, my latest makes me feel pretty good about my determination to make a pretty swirled soap.

It is curing now, but I'll take pics soon and show you the cut version.

Hello Friends:

I received an email that tells me today is “International Astrology Day”.

This brings back memories of my life a time ago. An interest in astrology was sparked in the fall of 1981. I began learning astrology at that time. I could put a natal, solar return, and horary chart together in no time by 1986.

It was in 1987 I found Dane Rudhyar’s library of books. I learned that my philosophy agreed with Mr. Rudhyar’s: that astrology is a tool to understand ourselves in a psychological manner; and I learned prediction is not the best way to use astrology. In 1988, I tried using natal and solar charts as psychological tools in a business way; but, nobody wanted to hear that. They want to know the future.

(The problem with astrology and the future is that astrology is only part of the picture. It does not take into account free will. It may show your tendency to be spontaneous, but it won’t tell me when, where, and how...not specifically, and usually, not even generally.)

I continued to accumulate books, knowledge, and practice merrily through 2003 when I rediscovered a book a friend had given me years before. I read it for the first time and learned that Western astrology uses a different ephemeris than Eastern astrology. Eastern astrology practices what may be called “real” time v. “symbolic” time of the West. What does this mean to me (or anyone)? Well, I’m not a Gemini in real time, I’m a Taurus. And, to tell you something, that was a relief for me. Because, if I am a Gemini, I am an awful slow one. But, if I am a Taurus, I’m right on. Like, whew!

In 2003, I redid everyone’s chart!!

In 2004, I lay down my astrology and picked up my soap pot. But, today, when I read that email (of course it was an ad), I was thrilled to remember that I dabble in astrology, and today celebrates it everywhere.

What's Happening...

Hi friends and followers:

It's been awhile, and I would like to catch you up on my goings on.

First thing is first; I had several orders lately, and this is very, very good news. My Etsy store has crossed the 200 sales mark, which is pretty exciting for me. My Etsy shop is 6 months old this month, and I feel some sort of demand has been found. Whoopee! And, wholesale orders are picking up. All good stuff and very busy stuff! :)

And, I'm making new shampoo bars as they become more and more popular. They represent my biggest sale item at Etsy, too. Matter of fact, I've had my first sale today at Hyena Cart, and it was a shampoo bar, too. So, I've made several batches of shampoo lately, both standard and new varieties. One cured and listed is my Marshmallow Honey Almond. Some new ones curing and not listed include Marshmallow Mint, Marshmallow Bergamot, Marshmallow Clary Sage blend, and Rosemary Green Tea.

Also, if I were to name the month of March, I would have to call it the "Month of Give Aways"!!!!! I am giving away a total of 190 sample soaps to 3 different organizations for 4 different reasons. 1 and 2 are EGCG doings - the guild I belong to at Etsy called Etsy Green and Clean Guild. 1 is a Swap with other guild members (yay!), and 2 is a contribution to a Swag Bag the guild is offering from the EGCG Etsy shop. 3 is for ( ) and the donation is purely a marketing tool and 60 soaps goes here. I sent 80 + 10 to Delane Mazaheri of "Experience the Reality of Success" seminar being help in Las Vegas near the end of this month for their "party" bags. This is more like a true donation.

And, I substitute teach and have had more calls than usual. I have two more days scheduled next week. And, here comes Spring, and am I ready...no. The weather has been an obstacle in the path of my wanting to get to my pre-spring garden work. But, plants wait on no man (or woman!). :)

International Day of Women came and went and whilst so, I was packaging 80 soaps for Las Vegas all that day. This for a seminar of women who own their own small businesses and want to expand. And, using cello bags with the pink ribbon of breast cancer awareness and the red stretch cord of heart disease in women awareness, and WOMEN being the crowding theme of SUNDAY, March 8, International Day of Women. So, I did not blog as I had wished to do, but I did an act that honored the Day and all Women, in general.

I appreciate you coming by and sharing this with me. I'm wanting to do a little skin care writing as spring and summer come along; but there are so many fine skin care writers offered even here on my blog site, that I may just continue writing on so many other situations. We'll see! ☺

Getting Rid of the Old makes way for the New!!!

Good morning from Eidson, Tennessee where it is 5 degree Fahrenheit this morning! A good morning to stay indoors finding things to do.

My husband has actually managed to begin clearing our herb beds for spring. I'm wondering when...was it when it was below freezing...raining...snowing...? When? ☺ But, it is starting to look good. I'll take pics when the temps get above freezing!

This is a short blog to share with you some glad tidings. Although I lost a store online (really, just not the right venue), I've gained three more.

1. Silk Fair is easy and difficult at the same time. I uploaded all my listings from Etsy, but it is a hard store to manage from behind the scenes. A little more experience, if you please. I am honored, though. I was notified that another shop marked me as their "favorite" shop. ♥

2. Shop Handmade is a little different. It is like I'm at a very, very nice Mall, and I must put on a nice display. So, this is a little slow going. But, I am enjoying the process a bit. Must be the Taurus side of me.

3. A very new (yesterday) shop where I have only begun to work out my categories. Hyena Cart, I must say, is an exquisite hosting site that seems both tasteful and vendor friendly. I will post more when I've made more progress here.

Sweet Creek Herbs is Leaving eBay!

Hi friends:

This is a little tough to write, because I made some real good customer friends at the first online store I had. But, I am up against the wall, and it is time to make a decision. It is a tough decision, but my eBay store has to go.

This little store costs me $30.00 a month to maintain and this is without one listing. Each listing is 3 cents that renews every 30 days, and I maintain about 90 listings. And, there is the 12% commission for what sells that is the highest online anywhere.

But, I am grateful to this site for giving me the opportunity to develop experience and confidence selling online. I learned a very lot, and I know this knowledge will help me always.

But, now I am at Etsy, Artfire, my own domain at http://www.sweetcreekherbalsoaps.com/. I'm looking at other handmade sites, such at http://www.madeitmyself.com/, http://www.shophandmade.com/, and others like these.

And, I am now developing a profile at http://www.byhand.me/. This is a new site developed for all sorts of artisans and handcrafters to develop a directory for their wares, and a site for those who would purchase handmade to have a huge selection of artisans and crafters from which to choose to shop. I am excited to be a part of this community.

My hope in all this is that I do not lose the dearest customers I gained through my eBay store. This is why I am blogging about this issue. When they look for me online, I hope they find this blog to explain my actions. My last day to be open will be February 28. March 1 will be no more eBay store for sweetcreekherbs.

Perks Living the Rural Life

Hi again.

People tell me I have it rough. I live out here in the sticks of Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee 30 minutes from anywhere (depends on who's driving). I've lived here since 1995 and wouldn't live in the city again unless I had no choice.

We use wood for heat. We grow, harvest, hunt, and fish our own food. We cultivate our own herbs for my skin care business. We cook our own meals. And, we are lucky to have privacy. Because, privacy would be the hardest thing to give up.

I'm blogging about rural living today, because I have something really cool to show you.

This breed of chicken is called Buff Orpington. They have real big legs - can you see? My husband has been trying to raise them naturally to a bigger brood of hens. We started with one, she hatched a few and lost her life to a racoon while her chicks were still bidees. A few made it, and now, two years later, we are up to 12 hens. It is a tough life for a baby chick. She or he may get stepped on by another hen, picked up and shook, drown in a puddle...so many things can happen to quickly end the life of a chick. Now, when they become grown, they are extremely tough animals.

These birds are known for laying in the winter. We are getting 4 to 8 eggs a day right now, and they are absolutely delicious. Something you can't taste from a grocery store unless they get their eggs locally.

And, aren't they beautiful. George (husband) just brought them in this evening, washed them and shows me. "Oh, let me take a picture", I tell him, "I'll blog about this tomorrow". I could tell that made him feel proud! And, of course, that makes me feel good. And, then, you know...one thing leads to another...♥

And, anyway, what do you think of that egg in the middle? Isn't it huge?

Also, we have one white hen! We are not sure where it came from, but we think it lays the greenish eggs. They are a bit more watery than the brown ones.

I know I usually do not blog two days in a row, but I had something to talk about today. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Crocheted Tunic Update #3

Good day, surfers.

It is a cold morning here, in northeast Tennessee. 12 degrees farenheit began my morning; but the sun is popping out this morning to dispel any thoughts of bad weather. I do hear, however, we may be getting a snow storm tonight! Oh dear! This is the time of year I'm over the snow and ready for the warm weather spring will bring.

I have finished the front of my tunic and getting ready to start the back piece today. I took pics of the front piece taped to the dress form in the pics.

The part I'm not crazy about is the sweetheart part of the neckline. It gives the effect I want, but the stitching part could be improved upon, I dare say!

I am double crocheting a big part of this mostly for speed. The single crochet rows are for effect (like at the waist) and coverage (at the bra line). I don't want to have to wear an undershirt under this piece.

I like it pretty much. It is definitely a winter tunic. It will be heavier than what I would want to wear in the summer. But, it might suffice on a chilly spring or fall day, too. It sure is following the contour of my favorite tee shirt:

The next step is the back piece to match the front piece. Then, I will sew the sides and crochet sleeves right into the garment. At that point, I will show you update number 4 - the sewn piece getting ready for the sleeves.

Thanks for being interested. It is a very soft piece of fabric. I think it will make a great tunic piece. You, my readers, are motivating me to finish this potential lovliness. I am excited about that.

To help myself in that department, I have lowered all my shipping costs. I am going to primarily use first class where under 10 or so ounce, and flat rate for the rest. This is going to save everyone money, including me whenever I got caught short (which is too many times!!).

My crocheted tunic is going a little slower than I would like. I do have the front done except for the single crochet row up the two sides of the front piece.

When that is done and pictures are snapped and edited, I will post a continuation for the Jaeger Roma tunic I am doing. I think it will make a nice winter tunic for someone who is hot flashing a few times everyday!!

I have some other fun pages I am putting together, too. I will post them for you when they are up to snuff.

Crochet Project (Tunic) Update

Good day, fellow webbers:)

I've not been avoiding you all. I live in northeast Tennessee, and school has been out all week with the weather. With the family here instead of out where they belong my seven hours a day, I find myself backed up somewhat. I've managed to twitter a bit, make a couple of soaps, and list a few new items in both shops.

I've turned my Artfire shop into my crochet world. These crochet items were listed on etsy (and some still are - work in progress), but I like them in their own store, and I like the soaps in their own store. Whether they sell or not?........But, I will change them up even if they don't.

The worse thing is I've not had time to crochet. I have the first side of my tunic just about done, but this is my first day alone again (boy went with man to work!!). I may have some time today. I am posting what I've got done. But, I hope to dwell on it a bit more the next time, too.

One thing is bothering me. I've downloaded java software in order to print international shipping labels, and I still get nothing. I would be much more hip on shipping international if it was as easy as shipping domestic!! It's quite disappointing. I guess my next move would be to go to java website and ask them why.

I'm going to make some soaps tomorrow, continue labeling soaps in their new labels, and manage to crochet a few rows. If so, Sunday, I'll be back with a crochet update.

Farm Expo 2009

Hi folks:

I usually hibernate in the winter. I do so many shows during the season (April through December) and the farmer's markets three times a week during the same season.

January through the first of April is my downtime, but I did a show this month called the Farm Expo 2009.

This is a picture of most of my four foot table. I participated along with the Kingsport Farmer's Market of Tennessee. I was glad to get all of 4 foot, really - there were 6 vendors there, including myself.

But, fortunately, everyone got 4' of space, and so that was a good thing.

Friday was a long day as the hours ran into 9 pm. Saturday was even longer as the sales were pretty low. But, Sunday made me glad I participated.

I saw a lot of folks I see during the selling season. I'm not saying that was a good thing, though some I was glad to see.

But, I am glad it is over, and now my time of hibernation is here. This doesn't mean a vacation, it just means more time on the Internet.

The next day or two will see me post my second blog on the tunic I am crocheting. It is coming along quite nicely. I have the front nearly finished. I will have pics and comments for you then.

New Project

Hi!

Today finds me beginning a new project I have been thinking on for two years.

I am going to crochet a tee shirt tunic for myself. I do very little crochet for myself - much for friends, and much more to sell, but little for me. It is almost like I am waiting for that perfect yarn to work on that perfect pattern that just never comes.

Well, I have heard that if you take a favorite garment, and crochet (or knit) to the shape of that garment, you will have made the "perfect" garment for you.

And, what is the "perfect" yarn? My definition would be yarn that is kind to the skin that does not cost a fortune.

I mentioned I have been thinking about this project two years. I have accumulated some yarn in that time, bamboo mostly, that was on sale here and there. But, I have found a yarn that excites me to work with and that I think will make a great tunic.

I went to http://www.smileysyarns.com where I found some Jaeger Roma in only three colors but on sale for $1.99!!

Yes, you see I bought 10 skeins. This yarn is often seen between $8 and $10. It is a soft and drapey blend of viscose, nylon and angora. The color above is a bit softer than what the pic portrays, and it matches my Bamboo Eco Luxe clothes from Spiegel. I have the dress, and this tunic would look great over the dress (my opinion).

And, I have a favorite tee shirt.

This morning, I popped it onto my dress form. And, I began my project.I am starting with the front. It measures 20 1/2 inches across for a slight flare at the bottom of the tunic. I will shape it to about 16 inches across by the time I reach my waist area. I will work this out, and I will post the pattern when finished.

I am doing this one in double crochet. I would like to do one in single crochet, but I am looking to motivate not discourage in my first attempt. Single crochet would take a while for me (but I love the fabric it creates). And, I am using a J hook.

If you would like to check out some yarn that you enjoy using but can rarely afford, check out smileys. I am pleased with their product and service. I also order from knitpicks (www.knitpicks.com). They have nice prices at free shipping over $50. And, Smiley's does have a minimum order of $50. (But, that is NOT hard for me...I don't buy much else.)

The title above will take you to an address that is an interesting read on ingredient labeling on skin care products.

I have researched skin care for more than four years. I have found that there is a big difference in opinion on what is good for our skin and what is not.

I come to the conclusion that it is good for our skin if:

1. we can pronounce the words in the ingredient list and know what they all are, and

2. we can eat those ingredients (except for the lye solution, but that's another blog).

But, it is an interesting subject, because we have many soapmakers out here labeling many different ways. I have seen some label by all the Latin names, and even if they are all good for our skin, it appears to be chock full of chemicals. I’ve seen some call their soaps all natural, while using fragrance oils in their soaps. And, some melt and pour glycerin soap makers might want to reread the ingredients in their melt and pour soap. There is a process of extracting the glycerin from soap that might not be the greatest for our skin.

It may not be common knowledge, but in the “scent” world, fragrance oil is man made, and essential oil is plant made. I have put a serious search out there, but Wholesale Supplies Plus is the only wholesaler with “all natural fragrance oils”. But, at this time, I have no more information than that. I have used the Honey Almond and the Cucumber, and I must say they do not give me a headache when sniffed heavily.

I advocate truth in advertising, and, so do a lot of folks; but truth is a relative word.

I list all ingredients with the common name, so if we do not know what it is, we can look it up easily. I list them on all products whether it is required by law or not, because everyone has a right to know what they are putting in their mouths, as well as putting on their skin. And, I list all ingredients used in the making of all products.

When I say all natural, I mean there are no synthetic ingredients in the product. I will not claim all natural when fragrance oil is used in the product. I use no synthetic ingredients, except for a few fragrance oils used in some soaps and one salve, and a few flavor oils used in some lip butters.

The thing is, if you are going to go all natural in your skin care, you want to know that it is all natural. When a seller says “all natural”, just check the list of ingredients and do your research if you see something you are not sure of. And, sellers of skin care products on the internet are more talkative and more willing to answer questions (I think less distractions), so do not hesitate to ask.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

There is a lot of buzz about new year resolutions on the internet. Have you resolved to make one?

I found a site that I could relate to when it comes to how hard it is to change something. You can go to http://www.kikabink.com/news/762/3-tips-for-making-new-years-resolutions and read Anna Johnson's take on what it takes to make and keep a resolution.

I started my soap vending business 4 years ago January 18. The first year, I forgot I had a family. My second year, I resolved to spend time with my family. Each year, I make a little more time for my family without compromising my business. It is slow, but there is progress.

I think it hard to change a habit, too. I quit smoking four years ago last October 8. This was not a gradual thing; I quit cold turkey on October 8. I had a lung infection, it was not hard to start the quit, though maintaining it was difficult. And, I still want one occasionally.

I personally think everyone should resolve to try at least one handmade natural soap this year; from me would be nice, too. :) This way, they can find out how wonderful their skin was made to feel upon bathing - so clean, soft, and not dry.

When Is a Pattern Yours?

I crochet and have for many, many years. I have come to the point in my crocheting in which I don’t refer to any pattern. I see what I want to crochet (albeit crocheted, knitted, sewed, or manufactured), and I crochet something as close as I can get it. This leads me to a serious question: When can you call a pattern yours?

It is my thinking that most everything that can be done with yarn has been done, at least as regards to patterns. I see new yarns coming out all the time, and I know these “new” yarns are really new. There are yarns being made out of milk fibers and shrimp shells, for goodness sakes! But, patterns? I really don’t see much that is new.

But, I have seen the same pattern claimed by many. That is odd.

I crochet a skinny scarf I have been crocheting for years for gifts and to sell. It is a simple mesh stitch that I did not look up, but I know it must be a common pattern. It is just a simple mesh stitch all through the scarf. But, is it mine?

If I wanted to write a Crochet Pattern Book, what patterns can I claim? If I create something I haven’t seen before, at what lengths do I have to look to see if it is out there by someone else? I know I cannot claim the patterns I find and duplicate.

I found a beautiful pattern for a pair of fingerless gloves. This pattern is not mine. But, if I find a different stitch and make one in the same dimensions, is that mine? If I cut it quite a bit shorter, is it mine? If I trim it out differently, does that make it mine?

This topic has been heavy on my mind, lately, so I thought I would write about it. I would be so glad to hear any comments from anyone so inclined.

Vinegar Rinse or No?

And, it seems we are still discussing shampoo bars. Do they need a vinegar or acid rinse or not? This seems to be a hot question online today.

NO, should be the answer we soap makers give to all our customers. "No, you do not NEED a acid rinse to use and benefit from a shampoo bar."

Here's the scoop on acid or vinegar rinses:

The first reason they were ever used, back before there were bottled conditioners or any type of synthetic soap, was to soften the hard water with which we rinsed our hair. In my herb books, this rinse is explained as the way our grandmothers conditioned their hair. Much of our water here in the states is hard. Limestone and other minerals abound in our water. And, most of us use water that runs through metal pipes, which adds mineral to the water. So, we deal with hard water. Vinegar, lime juice, lemon juice, and other acids will work to soften water; thereby softening our hair.

Now, as I peruse shampoo bar threads, I see that many people are under the misconception that a vinegar rinse is needed if you shampoo you hair.

I might be guilty for part of that, because I recommend using vinegar if you feel the need for a conditioner after using a shampoo bar. Why do I recommend this? Because, we want to keep it all natural on our head. That is the only reason.

We do not need an acid rinse to rinse out all the shampoo. In fact, an acid rinse just might do more harm than good. Because, if a shampoo bar is made well enough, then there will be lots of glycerin to condition the hair (without any help), and an acid rinse just might rinse out that extra glycerin. That would be sad.

I used vinegar for quite some time. My water is heavy in limestone, and I added essential oils for extra hair care. When I quit, my hair has less in it to weigh it down so it feels lighter and just as soft as ever. I thank the customer who challenged me on this.

And, I get a lot of these questions, because a lot of people are reading an acid rinse with shampoo bars is either necessary or makes it better. And, it just isn't true.

Well, I have said my piece. Everyone probably has one! :)

BTW, I made two soaps today...one is Cucumber Parsley Face Soap (swirled), and the other is Eucalyptus Shampoo bar. It will be four weeks to list them.

New Products in the Making♥

Hi guys:

It has been awhile, but I have been so busy you would not believe. Not so much with orders (though I have had a few), but with everything...making soap, making salves and lip balms, cleaning house for the holidays, attending my son’s basketball games, unpacking from the craft shows, taking pictures for online stores, building new stores, baking, etc., etc.!

My Mom received her fingerless gloves, and I think she likes them. Thanks to everyone who asked. I would like to say what I am making her for Christmas, but someone told her about my blog, and I think she is reading it now. So, that will be a secret until after I send them.

I am making some fun products this week. Yesterday, I remade a very popular fragranced soap: Honey Almond. It is an all natural fragrance oil put out by http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/. They have a few others, as well. I’m not crazy about their cucumber, but it may smell better in the soap. I haven’t tried that one, yet. But the Honey Almond I made in August wasn’t here long, so I am doing it again. Then, my UPS driver buys 6 of them, and they are not even out of the mold yet, much less cured for 4 weeks! lol

I’ve been using a recipe in which olive oil is the major oil with enough coconut and castor oils to make this olive oil a lathering soap. I give this recipe out at http://www.sweetcreekherbalsoaps.com/, if you are interested. But, the fun part is deciding on the additives. This soap, my additives are aloe butter, grape seed oil, calendula petals, paprika, and honey almond fragrance oil. I swirled the calendula and paprika mixed in with some of the soap into the base soap. And, it looks beautiful (it is pictured at the top of this blog). The calendula and paprika mixed to create a beautiful almond brown color.

Today, I am making my recipe for my Tropical Butter Salve. This is the first salve I made for the business. The gist of this recipe comes from Glory Bee’s catalog of 2004. It is rich in butters, coconut oil, avocado oil, and vitamin e with a fragrance of vanilla fragrance oil and grapefruit essential oil for a very tropical smell...like, “Where’s that Pina Colada?” At least, that is what I think of. It is very popular in its texture and fragrance both. I have a wholesale order for a few 1 oz. sizes that I am filling today.

When it rains, I have no Internet service. I use wildblue satellite, and it doesn’t do rain at all. It is rainy today, and I wrote this on Word. As soon as it stops raining, I will post it.

Hi folks:

I see by my google analytics that I have a few visitors popping in. Thanks for stopping by. It is good to know that I am not writing for naught! :)

I have a couple of things to say today:

1. I thought I had published my former blog a few days back. It is just going up today. I thought it had posted, but it was sitting in my list of blogs on my dashboard but nowhere on my blog page. It is published now, though, if you care to read it. It is what I promised to show when I finished my crocheted fingerless gloves.

And, I still have to learn how to post links to other sites on my blog. Haven't learned that one, yet. Well, I consider myself slow to catch on, but once there, never gone! I have an eBay store that I just got to look the way I wanted months ago. I guess that is not a bad thing unless you are online, then the speed thing kind of takes over!

2. This post is about my shampoo bars. I have been following a forum thread that is reviewing shampoo bars from different soap makers. I think mine is the 9th one reviewed, and it was a long wait. But, oh, so worth the wait. It received an excellent review from said author of blog. And, I have already received a customer from this review. See how fast everything is here online? Oh, gosh, you already know that!

She has a review of 9 different shampoo bars, and she is now comparing interview questions for 5 soaps makers, and I find this just as exciting as the reviews. If you would like to check her out, you might find some interesting reading.

I am answering questions on Yahoo, too, to spread my business name a bit; but also to let people know there are all natural alternatives to all health and beauty situations. And, interestingly enough, I am getting great feedback from the questioners regarding my answers.

And, real important to know is it does not have to be expensive. Watch those companies that want to take advantage of the "natural" trend. You want to stick with those who will be doing this before during and after a trend passes through. Their prices will be reasonable and consistent.

I am going to work on this page today and try to learn a few things. If you have any comments, I'd like to hear them. Otherwise, have safe fun! (At 52, safe fun is very good!)
